'Time's Twisted Arrow' by Rysa Walker Blog Tour: Guest Review and Giveaway

Time's Twisted Arrow
The Chronos Files Series Book #1
By Rysa Walker
Publication date: October 1st 2012
Genre: YA Science Fiction

"Sharp writing, a flair for dialogue and a big, twisting imagination." - Kirkus Reviews.

They weren't panic attacks. Of that, seventeen year old Kate is certain, no matter what the shrink told her parents. But it's even harder to accept the explanation offered by her terminally ill grandmother - that Kate has inherited designer DNA from the time-traveling historians of CHRONOS, who were stranded in the past by a saboteur. Kate knows that her grandmother's story could easily be the brain tumor talking, but that doesn't explain the odd medallion or the two young men - one of them hauntingly familiar -- who simply vanish before her eyes on the subway. It doesn't explain Trey, the handsome stranger who now occupies Kate's assigned seat in trig class. And it definitely doesn't explain why Kate is now in an alternate timeline, where leaders of a previously unknown cult hold great power and are planning a rather drastic form of environmental defense.

In this new reality, Kate's grandmother was murdered at age twenty-two on a research trip to the past, which means that Kate's mother was never born, her father doesn't know her and, for all intents and purposes, she doesn't exist. The only thing keeping her from disappearing entirely is the strange blue medallion around her neck, and the only thing keeping her sane is her burgeoning relationship with Trey. To restore the time line, Kate must travel back to 1893 and keep herself and her grandmother clear of H.H. Holmes, the serial killer who is stalking young women at the Chicago World's Fair. But that choice comes at a price - she'll remember the past few months with Trey, but when he looks at her, he'll see a total stranger.

'The Holders' by Julianna Scott Blog Tour :Review and Giveaway

The Holders
Holders Series Book #1
By Julianna Scott
Expected Publication Date: March 5, 2013

17-year-old Becca spent her whole life protecting her brother from, well, everything. The abandonment of their father, the so called 'experts' who insist that voices in his head are unnatural and must be dealt with, and the constant threat of being taken away to some hospital and studied like an animal.

When two representatives appear claiming to have the answers to Ryland's perceived problem, Becca doesn't buy it for one second. That is until they seem to know things about Ryland and about Becca and Ryland's family, that forces Becca to concede that there may be more to these people than meets the eye.

Though still highly skeptical, Becca agrees to do what's best for Ryland. What they find at St. Brigid's is a world beyond their imagination. Little by little they piece together the information of their family's heritage, their estranged Father, and the legend of the Holder race that decrees Ryland is the one they've been waiting for.

She meets Alex, a Holder who is fiercely loyal to their race, and for some reason, Becca and Ryland. There's an attraction between Becca and Alex that can't be denied, but destiny gets in the way, and they are all in for a surprise that will change what they thought they knew about themselves and their kind forever.

THE HOLDERS is a modern day fantasy about incredible powers and extraordinary people.

The Holders is the first book in the series of the same name by Julianna Scott.  I was intrigued just from the synopsis of the book and I'm so very glad I signed up to be part of this tour. This was one of the most enjoyable reads of the year so far for me. It truly had a little bit of everything  I love in it.

Set in Ireland (for the most part) and told from the viewpoint of Becca, the main character, The Holders is a fast and highly entertaining read.  It is very easy to like Becca-she is fierce, protective, smart and funny. But she's not perfect, which makes her all the more interesting to me. She gets mad and she doesn't try to hide it. She grabs your attention from the beginning and doesn't let go.

I honestly can say I loved pretty much everything about this book. It was fast paced, suspenseful, funny and romantic all at once. It had a stellar cast of characters and a great plot. I cannot wait to read the next installment.

Julianna was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and spent the majority of her educational career convinced she would be a musician. However, after receiving her music degree from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, she realized that she'd been born in the wrong era for her dreams of singing jazz to adoring fans clad in zoot-suits and flapper dresses to come true, and began to wonder if her true calling might be elsewhere.

While Julianna had always excelled in writing throughout school, she'd never considered it a career possibility until about three years ago, when she'd gotten her first story idea and decided to go for it. She grabbed her laptop, started typing away, and has never looked back.

Cover Reveal for "Tied' by Laney McMann

Tied
Fire Born Book # 1
By Laney McMann
Publication Date: September 9, 2013
Published By: J. Taylor Publishing

Normal people don't believe their nightmares stalk them. They don’t fall in love with boys who don’t exist, either.

Seventeen-year-old Layla Labelle, though, is far from normal. Her delusions walk the earth. Her hallucinations hunt her, and her skin heats to a burn every time her anger flares.

Or is that all in her head?

Layla doesn't know what to believe any more because if none of that’s true, Max MacLarnon must be an illusion, and her heart must still be broken.

No matter how much she wants to believe Max is real, doing so would mean everything else is, too. How, then, is that possible?

The answers lie in an age-old legend the supernatural aren’t prepared to reveal, and with a curse that could tear Layla and Max apart forever—if it doesn’t kill them both first.

In TIED, book one in the Fire Born trilogy, learning the truth will mean fighting an arsenal of demons, and being with Max will put Layla on a path toward her own destruction.

Just how far will Layla go to protect the one she loves?

The answer may never be far enough ... away.

With a passion for the supernatural and all things magical, Laney developed a voracious appetite for reading fantasy at a young age. A vivid imagination helped set the stage for creating her own worlds and placed her onto the writing path.

By the time she reached her teens, she'd accumulated notebooks full of poems, which led to short stories and finally novels. Young adult dark fantasy, paranormal romance, and mythology are among her favorite genres.

A former classical dancer and chef, she grew up in sultry Florida where she still resides with her family.

Blog Tour: Review: Blindsighted Wanderer by E.C. Hibbs, w/ interview and giveaway

Blindsighted Wanderer
By E.C. Hibbs
Published November 20th, 2012 by Darkest Night Publishing

The Wall has long kept Elitland Valley safe from the demons on the other side. For centuries the villagers have avoided speaking of the Wall or the creatures it protects them from.

Upon their return from the annual Country Fayre, the older Atego brothers learn of their father's passing. When fifteen year old Silas Atego learns the mysterious illness that took his father might have been a curse from a demon, his need for answers draws him to the one place he must not go. The far side of the Wall.

When Silas is still missing days later, his older brother Raphael sets out on his own to bring him home. On his journey, Raphael learns how it was his ancestor who was cursed by a demon creature from the Lake and had the Wall built to keep them out. More desperate than ever to find his brother, his search draws Raphael to the same terrifying barrier.

Along with the brothers' individual travels they face their greatest fears, make lifelong friends, and more importantly, learn the truth of what happened centuries ago.

Blindsighted Wanderer is a book I snatched off of Mel when we were passing around the tours, and I am so very thrilled I took it. While I am sick to death of anything supernatural, lately, this book grabbed my attention from the prolog and didn't let go.

While I am a little obsessed with Raphael and Merrin, I adored all the other characters and each other their arcs (ESPECIALLY Merrin's... I can't explain why, for I shall not give you all spoilers, but it is very great to see how much she is effected and how she matures). The novel is filled with twists I never saw coming, with enough action and romance to keep anyone interested!

The only thing that makes this a four-star rather than five, for me, is that it took me a little while to get into it... I found the beginning to be a bit slow and overly-descriptive, but otherwise, this is probably one of my favorite books this year!

I will definitely be following Hibbs for more wonderful stories!

My Rating:

And now, our interview with E.C. Hibbs!

*Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I’m 21 years old, and I live in Cheshire: a county in north-west England sort-of sandwiched between the sea and two sets of hills. I studied animals at university; I graduated as a Bachelor of Science last year and now I’m doing my master’s degree. Aside from working on assignments and making up stories, I enjoy artwork, practicing Shotokan karate and archery, and generally being outside!

*When did you know you wanted to be an author?

Writing is something I’ve done since I was quite young. It feels like a natural progression really. I started off with short stories and then moved onto novels as I got older. It became an activity that I relied on more and more, as something I just had to do. It didn’t enter my head to really think about being an author until I was in my early teens, and my dad asked if I’d ever want to get published. I thought about it, and realized how amazing it would be: I would have a reason to always live inside my imagination! When I eventually decided to have a go at submitting manuscripts, it took a while, as well as a few different novels and too many rejections to count! But I didn’t let it dishearten me, so I tried again with Blindsighted Wanderer. I was so happy when it turned out to be “the one”!

*Do you like to listen to music while you write, or do you prefer the quiet?
I always have music playing when I’m working, but on a low volume. I find it quite difficult to concentrate in complete silence. Usually for each of my novels, I’ll have a list of songs that I think mirror the story, and I’ll listen to them sometimes – then after I finish the book, I’ll trim them all down to the ones that fit best! But for general background sound, I tend to put on film soundtracks or classical music. There aren’t many genres I won’t listen to!

*It seems like authors break down into two groups, plotters (authors who outline and are extremely detail oriented) and pantsers (authors who are more ‘go with the flow’ and kind of fly by the seat of their pants)-which group do you fit into?
I’m definitely a plotter. I used to be more of a pantser; as soon as I had an idea, I’d dive headfirst into the story and just let it take me wherever it wanted. But I soon found out it wasn’t doing me any favours. Parts seemed rushed or too dragged out, there were plot holes galore, and I’d get so swept up in everything that I wouldn’t know how to move it forward. So my last few novels have all been planned, and since I tried that technique, it’s less messy, and I’ve really nailed down the way I can work best. I’ll spend more time preparing for the story, and I’ll write down a synopsis beforehand, to act as a basic walkthrough. That way, I know where all the important points need to be brought up to let everything flow right; but I still have enough freedom to explore and live the story as though it’s reality. I think being a plotter means there’s a lot more work that needs to be done in advance, but for me, that’s all part of the fun. And I’ve had much less writer’s block since I started planning things out, so I definitely prefer it!

*What authors have influenced you & your writing?
One of my biggest influences is Philip Pullman. I first picked up His Dark Materials when I was about eleven, and I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve re-read them. I’m also quite inspired by Neil Gaiman; and Marcus Sedgwick, because of the way he can merge history and fantasy but still keep a sinister undertone to his work. Another huge influence on me is Christopher Paolini. I wasn’t just blown away by the descriptions and world he’d created, but also because he’d done it all at the same age I was when I read them. That was a big push for me, in hoping that my writing dreams could come true while I was young, too.

*What was your favorite book as a child?
Without a doubt, the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Michelle Paver (I can’t narrow it down to just one book!). Those are the stories I would take with me to a desert island. When it comes to following a big series and buying every new book on the day it comes out, Michelle Paver’s, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Harry Potter were the defining ones of my adolescence/teenage years. But I really had a huge love for Oliver Twist as well!

*If you could spend one day with any literary character, who would you choose and what would you do together?
I’d love to have a day with Torak, Renn and Wolf from the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness. I think spending time in a stone-age forest, among all the animals, would be incredible. Plus it would give me good reason to walk around with a bow and arrows all day! Another who I think would be quite interesting to meet would be Valerian from the Book of Dead Days. He’s not the most welcoming of characters, but since I first read it, I’ve been fascinated by the way he’s written. I’d probably run a mile depending on which day I ended up meeting him, though!

*Mel and I both have an unending love for really good cheesecake; is there a dessert you can’t say no to?
My favourite desserts are ice cream or chocolate fudge cake. But I love cheesecake as well; if it’s strawberry or chocolate-topped then I definitely can’t leave it alone. One day when I was in Florida, I even went to the Cheesecake Factory for breakfast!

*Can you tell us what’s next for you?
I’d love to! I’m currently working on a handful of new novels, including a fantasy/action-adventure trilogy. So I’m doing research and editing for them, getting to know the characters before I write down what they have to say. And my second novel is due out soon, a vampire thriller called My Tragic Silence, so I’m looking forward to that!

E. C. Hibbs has lived all her life in Cheshire, north-west England. A lover of stories from an early age, she wrote her first 'book' when she was five, and throughout school was a frequent visitor to the younger classes to read her tales to the children.

Living so near the coast, she loves anything to do with the sea. She studied Animal Behaviour at university and longs to work with marine mammals in the future. As well as nature and animals, she also has a soft spot for history, and loves paying visits to castles, cathedrals and museums.

There are many things she could be without, but writing isn't one of them. She carries a pen everywhere, in case an idea appears, and takes pride in still seeing the world as brimming with magic. Besides writing, she reads obsessively, her favourite genres being the classics and all kinds of fantasy. She also enjoys Disney and horror films, practising Shotokan karate, drawing, archery, and playing with her very cheeky kitten.

'Sweetest Taboo' by Eva Marquez: Excerpt and Giveaway

Sweetest Taboo
By Eva Marquez
Publication Date: October 1, 2012
Genre: *Mature* YA Adult Contemporary Romance/Ages 16+/Females

Isabel Cruz was fifteen years old when she met Tom Stevens. She was 15 when they started dating, and 16 when she lost her virginity to him. By the time she turned 18 and went to college, everything had fallen apart. This hadn’t been an ordinary love, though. Not a love between two dear friends, or even high school sweethearts. This had been the most taboo sort of love there was: a relationship between a student and her teacher. Isabel started her high school career as a normal student, but set her sights on Tom Stevens as soon as she met him, and pursued him with an intense – and sometimes reckless – fascination. When he finally approached her after swim practice and told her that he shared her feelings, it was the start of a forbidden and dangerous relationship. (Goodreads)

“You’re my sweetheart," he told me, his voice sad. "I can’t imagine life without you. I don’t want to have to imagine life without you.”

Tom rarely used terms of endearment with me, these days. When he did – in these rare moments when he called me his sweetheart – my heart melted. All of the turmoil, the sleepless nights, the protracted nature of our relationship, became nothing more than a passing inconvenience and very worthwhile. Tonight, though, I knew that the word came with drawbacks. They gave me the courage I needed to say the words I’d been dreading.

“My graduation won’t affect our relationship, you know that," I told him. "Look at how much we’ve been through together. If we made it through all of that, we can make it through anything. Tom, I want to be with you always, no matter where life takes me after graduation.”

I spoke passionately, fully believing in what I said. I was absolutely devoted to this man. But somewhere deep inside, I knew I was being dishonest. Neither of us wanted our relationship to change, but it was clear that things were going to change, and soon. I had just been offered a place at a small, private liberal arts college on the East Coast. The choice had been difficult because although I wanted to stay close to Tom, I also wanted to move forward with my life. In the end, I accepted the offer. Tom hadn’t really reacted when I told him. It hadn’t affected our relationship. Now, though, the cracks were starting to show.

“I want to believe that,” Tom answered quietly. “I loved the last letter you wrote me. Every time I read your letters, I feel like I’m sixteen again. I feel like I’ve come out of a deep sleep." A
pause, and then, "I can’t lose you, Isabel. You’re the reason I wake up in the morning; I can’t love anyone more than I love–”

Suddenly I heard a distinct click on the line. My heart plummeted.

“Did you hear that?" Tom snapped, his tone suddenly terse. "Did someone pick up the phone at your house?”

“Hold on a minute, let me check inside.” I slipped back inside and listened, but the house was completely quiet. The kitchen phone was on the counter, my mom’s office was dark, and I was holding the only other phone in the house.

"Who picked up the phone?” Tom repeated, worry coloring his voice.

The click had not originated on my end of the line. I should've been relieved, but my panic rose even more.

“Tom," I whispered into the receiver. "It wasn’t here, everyone’s asleep..."

“I have to go," Tom interrupted abruptly. "Danielle's coming.”

There was another click, and the line went dead.

Chapter 2 - Hacked

The orange glow of internal lamps within Shantytown blurred above Zachary’s rush. The home he shared with his dad lay on the ground floor of a tower, a short distance from the entrance to the town.

He altered his grip of the supple package so as not to alert the attention of the beggars that lived along the gutter-trenches. Yanking keys attached by string from a pocket, he undid four door-locks on his front door. The inside offered a stove, table, and two chairs in the first section. Opposing corridors in the middle led off to the two bedrooms and at the far end was the bits-and-pieces zone. From behind ragged cloths attached to the corrugated iron-sheeted walls, he took a match from a box and lit the single lantern to illuminate the area above the table. Shadows formed like creeping creatures, moving deeper into the dark at the rear.

He peered down at the contents of the saucepan on the single electric plate of the stove. Minced rabbit meat. Spores of white fluff covered it. A putrid smell, worse than the sewers, invaded his nostrils. With his thoughts attached to the Intercom, he’d trusted the claim that it was fresh meat when he bought it. Zachary retched. Nothing came out.

Shekhar’s seven Leo-coins would have purchased an armful of potatoes instead, but it’d been months since he’d consumed something worth chewing. Almost all his dad earned disappeared to the slumlords of District Two and the Resourcers, who didn’t deserve payment for their volt-line stealing induction coils.

With one cup from a tub of water into the saucepan, then, nostrils squeezed, he slid the lid over it.

Zachary drew back the curtain next to the stove. Inside the alcove, a Haulage- 404 droid hung mid-way from bolts secured to the wall. The Haulages were ancient, labour-efficient droids used for construction purposes. Oblong headed with two circular eyes and a blocky plated jaw, the droid resembled a muscular human clad in copper armour. With one defunct eye, its left arm removed, and nothing below its waist this was a little more complete than the one on Biro’s table. Skin. Zachary wriggled the image from his mind as he stroked the droid’s torso. No – this was how droids were meant to be. Metal and screws.

To the rear section of his home sat the Bombay core-generator. He often wondered how his bulky-framed dad managed to step over the toilet-hole to reach it. Five LEDs along the Bombay’s top remained empty. Zachary swapped two crocodile clips over, and then rotated the generator’s wheel. The LEDs remained unchanged, even after a third rotation.

“Come on.”

His dad had paid the Resourcers their twice-weekly charge – hadn’t he? Loosening his tense fingers, he banged the top of the generator. An internal component whirred as two of the LEDs lit up with a soft aqua tone.

“Next time you do that, I’ll shove my screwdriver in and dismantle you,” Zachary growled at it.

Back at the droid, Zachary took the coiled-tube that ran the length of his home from the stove’s socket. Clearing dust from an exposed chest-plate on the droid, he thrust the coiled-tube inward. A current sizzled along twisted circuitry. Tiny blue lights illuminated its functioning eye.

“Hello, Patch,” said Zachary pulling over a chair.

Imran Siddiq may have tried to leave Leicester a few times, but its become his place to wake up to two cats, freeze when the heating’s off and most of all, get down to writing. At a young age, his primary school teacher commented on his creativity and ability to tell stories. At the age of 29, during a night in the jungle, the bug inside awakened, and for the last 5 years he’s been sacrificing every second that he can to write. A veteran of writing festivals, a presence on Twitter and gobbling up all forms of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, he hopes he can bring a smile to others in the same way that he had, aged 5, reading with a torch under his duvet. Imran’s preferred genre is YA Sci Fi, and he has a tendency to throw a droid in every novel.
