Knotted Roots Series by Ruthi Kight Tour- Author Interview & Giveaway

Hey Ruthi- thanks so much for taking the time to stop by and talk with us today!! We are so excited to have you here!
*Thank you sooo much for having me! It’s a true honor!

Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?
*Well, I’m a full-time mother and full-time student. I love the color pink (that’s not obvious, right?) I’m quickly approaching the big 3-0 in December, so I’m desperately trying to hold on to my twenties. I’m not ready for the “mom” jeans! I love to write, but I really love to read! Reading has always been my passion. I’m also deathly afraid of those big-booty spiders! Have you seen those things? They’re huge!

Can you tell us about your writing process?
*Usually, I’ll get a general idea in my head. Sometimes it starts with a particular character, other times it’s a place or a plot twist that I see. I sit down with the idea and flesh it out, twist it to my will (lol), and then discover all the little things that I need to know. I love to get in depth with my characters. Then it’s plotting time. From start to finish. That’s the fun part! Then...comes the writing, in which I continue to beat myself up, over and over, until I throw my hands up and just let it flow, lol. I am terribly hard on myself.

Did you approach writing ‘Burn Out’ differently than you did the Knotted Roots novels?
*Most definitely. With Knotted Roots, it was a slow and steady process. The characters were younger, less life experience, so I had to be sure not to make them more mature than they really were. With Burn Out, it was fast! It was completely different from anything I had done before, especially the mystery part of it. I really enjoyed writing it. So I had to approach them differently. Knotted Roots I was censored, due to the age group, but with Burn Out...I let it all hang out, lol. It was quite fun and refreshing.

Having written both Young Adult and New Adult novels, which do you prefer?
*I think they both hold a special place for me. I love writing NA just because I can be freer with the subject matter and the language. But with YA, I get the chance to connect with a younger audience. To possibly have an impact, ya know?

When did you know you wanted to be an author?
*I’m still not sure most days! LOL I love to write. It helps me destress, but the other parts of the business, like the marketing and such, that’s the part I stink at. If I could just write, I think I would be a very happy lady most of the time! LOL

Who was your favorite author growing up?
*Jane Austen, definitely. I have read every book she wrote at least a dozen times. In fact, I just finished re-reading Pride and Prejudice last night. My all time favorite book.

Are your characters completely made up or do you find they contain parts of you and/or people in your life?
*Most of my characters have bits of my friends sprinkled into them. I’m a people watcher, so I like to sit back and take notes on the people I meet. So, usually part of them will end up in one of my characters. The character of Katy, in Knotted Roots and Hidden Falls, is based on one of my best friends. Grandma Betty was based on my oldest friend in the world. She got quite upset at the end of Knotted Roots though, lol.

What is the best book you’ve read in the past year?
*Slammed, by Colleen Hoover and Today Only, by D. Love. Those two are a tie because they both made me cry like a baby. Such amazing messages in both of them.

Can you tell us what’s next for you?
*Well, I’m planning on two more releases this year, including the second full length book in the Knotted Roots series, as well as the first book in a new paranormal trilogy. I’ll give you guys one hint, lol. It involves mermaids...and not your typical ones either :) We all knew that was coming, right? I always have something weird up my sleeve LOL.

That’s all for us, thank you again, so much Ruthi!! We can’t wait to read what you decide to share with us next!!
*Thank you, again, for having me! Such a fun interview!!!

Frost Series by Liz DeJesus Tour- Playlist & Giveaway

Last year while I was thinking about how to start writing Glass Frost, I was listening to "The Catalyst" by Linkin Park. I hadn’t written a single word yet, but as I listened to this song I had a clear image of Bianca crawling out of a pit. I was driving at the time (which is a dangerous thing to do if you have my brain because I literally go somewhere else when I’m writing) and I just burst into tears. I wanted to know what happened that made Bianca fall into that dark place. How was she supposed to get out of there? Why wasn’t there someone there to help her? So that was another plot point that I could reach.

Like memories in cold decay
Transmissions echoing away
Far from the world of you and I
Where oceans bleed into the sky
Lift me up, Let me go...

It was that particular part of the song that just got to me for some reason. I can’t wait for you all to read that scene in the book. I hate torturing my characters, but sometimes that’s the only way they will learn and grow.

Here’s another list of songs I was listening to while I wrote Glass Frost.

1. Enchanted by Taylor Swift
2. I’m Shipping Up to Boston by The Dropkick Murphys
3. 2-1 by Imogen Heap
4. Glittering Cloud by Imogen Heap
5. Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap

Did I mention that I love Imogen Heap? LOL I do! She’s my favorite singer/songwriter.

6. Set the Fire to the Third Bar by Snow Patrol (featuring Martha Wainwright)
7. The Last Time by Taylor Swift (featuring Gary Lightbody)
8. A Sorta Fairytale by Tori Amos
9. Vitamin String Quartet Performs Imogen Heap
10. Stolen by Dashboard Confessional

I strolled to the other side of the car and got in. “Remember, if we see Joe, we don’t know him.” “Got it.” Emily got in, backed out, and headed to the restaurant. “I wasn't going out, but Mom says Sean would want me to get back to a normal routine.” I choked up. Driving the speed limit, thirty-five mph, Emily looked straight ahead. “Right now there’s nothing you can do for Sean. Your mom and dad are probably worried about you. They don’t want you to put your entire life on hold. I think it would help them to see you have fun, even if it’s just a little.” She glanced over at me then right back to the road. “You should try for their sakes.” I’d heard bad times brought out true friends. Emily really cared about my family and me. “Okay, but Sean needs me. After all he’s done for me surely there’s something I can do.” “For sure. As he recovers you can support him.” If only he would get well. Emily pulled into the parking lot in front of The Grill and cut the engine. Outside, the brick building appeared as sedate as a house with no one home. We opened the brown wood door into a crowded, busy room, live with chatter and soft rock playing in the background. Some co-eds gathered at tables in the middle of the floor. Others stood around the counter or in front of red booths packed with students. My mouth gaped. Joe Garrett sat amid the high school crowd. Here already? He fit right in wearing his light blue polo shirt, his hair hanging below his ears. I re-directed my gaze away from him as Emily and I strolled by. A group of kids sitting in the booth behind him got up and left. Emily and I slipped into it. Ray hurried over and took our orders, a chicken salad sandwich for Emily and a hamburger for me. He returned with the food at the same time Jimmy Wilmore squeezed past the masses gathered in front of the cashier’s counter. My pulse pounded in my ears as Jimmy walked toward Emily and me. My mind went blank for fear he could see right through me with those piercing blue eyes of his, even to my innermost thoughts, including how cute I thought he was. I nearly dropped my hamburger, but managed to hold it in mid-air while I looked down at the butcherblock table. “Hi Margaret, I’m really sorry about Sean. I’m keeping him in my prayers.” Excitement raced through my body as words failed me. Dare I look into his eyes? I focused on his lips. “Thanks.” “Hi Jimmy, have a seat.” Emily sounded casual and friendly. He sat beside me. My heart thumped so hard I worried he heard it as he put his arm around the back of the seat and touched my shoulders. “How’d your classes go today? I wanted to talk to you after English, but you got out before I had a chance.” Thank goodness. Seeing him here was less stressful. I fidgeted with my paper cup then sat it down and tore tiny pieces off the napkin in my lap. “It wasn't bad. Everyone was so good to me.” “Well, they better be.” Jimmy’s voice sounded protective. My heart melted. I let my eyes meet his. They looked caring and sincere like those of a friend. I stopped tearing up the leftover napkin. “So--what happened while I was gone?” I tried to sound laid-back. “In class, the usual, homework, tests, same old stuff.” Jimmy shifted in his seat and moved his arm. Had something unusual happened outside of class? Did he know anything about Winstrol V? That would be strange because Mike said he didn't, and he played football. I wanted information so bad. “What about sports?” Jimmy leaned back and wrinkled his brow. “Funny you would ask I've heard some athletes are taking steroids.” I stopped breathing. Emily’s eyes grew wide as she leaned across the table. “Really?” Jimmy raised his blond eyebrows. “Yeah, a couple guys mentioned it after we played soccer.” I took in air. My insides raced as if someone turned my nerves on high, but I had to stay calm. I needed answers. I didn't know Jimmy played soccer. “Are the soccer players taking them?” “You’re awfully interested. Do you two want to buff up?” I gagged and couldn't speak. Emily gasped. “No. Of course not. We’re just curious, that’s all.” Jimmy shrugged his shoulders. “I have no idea. I overheard the conversation, but I didn't join it.” I ripped the rest of the napkin into tiny bits. “Well think. Exactly what did you hear?”
