Genre- YA Fantasy
King Englewood is dead. Logan Lassain, the Protector of Ter Chadain, has cleared the way for his sister, Teah, to claim the throne as the rightful Queen of Ter Chadain and cast out the invading Caltorian forces. But Teah cannot claim that throne. She is captive on a slave ship sailing to Caltoria with other magical slaves to have their fates decided by the evil Empress of Caltoria. With Logan in pursuit to free her, Teah must keep her identity as rightful Queen of Ter Chadain hidden until she can escape. As a slave, Teah’s magical powers are withheld from her by an ancient gemstone placed on her forehead called a “soul stone”. The clear gem darkens in color once placed upon a magical’s forehead indicating the strength of their magic. Teah’s stone darkens to a deep black marking her as the strongest magical in Caltoria since her ancestor, the first Queen of Ter Chadain. This draws unwanted attention and puts her future in great peril. Logan and his small band of rescuers must hurry. Their quest is difficult. The cost is high. New allies are found. Old friends are lost…forever. Risking death at every turn, they rush to rescue Teah. But the only way Logan can save Teah and keep Ter Chadain from falling under Caltorian rule is by not only risking death, but risking something more precious…his freedom.
And here is an excerpt from Book 2 -
Logan watched Stalwart shrink on the horizon as the large schooner, The Morning Breeze, raced out to sea. The thought of the protectors tugged at his insides. He never believed having them out of his head would be something he could miss, but he did. The comfort that came with their chaos, he now longed for.
How could his life change so much so quickly? He remembered the devastation at their homestead on the edge of the Treebridge Forest that day he raced back to the house after witnessing his father’s death. His mother lay on the kitchen floor with her own kitchen knives sticking from her stomach.
He swallowed hard, taking a stuttered deep breath as Stalwart blurred in his vision and he fought back the tears.
The vision of finding his older sister lying against the well, already gone, came to him and he cried in earnest, his tears rolling down his cheeks.
A smile fought through his sorrow as he recalled finding Teah alive. They ran for their lives, not knowing where they would go or who they could look to for help.
He wiped the tears from his eyes and a soft chuckle escaped his throat as he remembered first seeing Grinwald, the skinny healer with his glasses hanging on the end of his nose always threatening to fall off. His memory flashed ahead to the forest where Grinwald sacrificed himself to ensure that he and Teah escaped Caldora. The rage and anger he once thought reserved for Englewood surged through him as he saw Caldora standing over Grinwald releasing a burst of magic into his chest, killing the Viri Magus.
His hands gripped the rail, crushing the wood under his grasp as his anger took on new targets. When he found Caldora, she would answer for what she did to his family and friends. The Protector of Ter Chadain would seal her fate. Ordestan already assured his death by the protector’s hands.
He looked down at the crumpled railing and then at Stalwart now only a speck on the diminishing horizon. He once believed the protectors’ spirits fueled his anger, stoked his rage, but perhaps they only fanned it. With the protectors gone, his rage smoldered strong under the surface waiting to be unleashed on Caldora, Ordestan, or anyone else who stood between him and Teah.
