James returned to where I sat and hunkered down next to me. We surveyed our group of misfits and lost souls. He brushed a lanky piece of inky hair out of his face and glanced at me.
“Are you really going to do it?”
I nodded. James was the only one who knew the truth of my heritage; the rest of the kids thought I told fairytales to help them sleep at night. “I have to. We can’t keep living like this. Something has to change.”
“But if she didn’t want her life back at twelve, what makes you think she wants it back now?”
“She doesn’t; she won’t give it back easily. I’ll have to fight her, and if all the rumors are to be believed, she fights dirty. That’s what I need you for.”
Our eyes met. His grey eyes steeled and he nodded. “I know what I have to do. I’ll do it.”
Doubts clouded my mind. I reached out and touched his arm. “Just… don’t—don’t get hurt.” I choked on the words, emotion getting the better of me. He gave me a crooked smile.
“Aw shucks, Kat, I almost think you care.” His grey eyes lit with mirth. I took a shaky breath and shoved at his shoulder, not moving him at all.
“You’re the brother I never had; of course I care for you. I care for all of you. I want to take all of you home with me.”
He glanced at Amelia. “Did you mean what you told her? Would you really take her home with you?”
“Yes. She deserves a better life. We all do. I’m going to make that happen. I just need some help getting there.”
He held up both hands to stave off my argument. “You don’t need to convince me, Princess. I’m already helping you.”
“I know. You probably have the most dangerous job to do.”
