Mel’s Quickie Review:

Heir of Fire is the third book in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas. I (mostly) loved the first two books but after the way Crown of Midnight ended, I was unsure where Maas would take our battered heroine next. I will be honest and tell you, I had to force myself to push through the first half (and maybe a little more) of this book. Suddenly, we had so many new characters and Celaena was sort of pushed to the side, which wasn’t bad so much as it was confusing. It was just slow. And depressing. And when we did see her, Celaena was in super bitch mode; she was an angry, prickly cat, constantly swiping at anyone who even attempted to show her any kindness. Annoying. It made it hard to want to keep going. I was mostly glad Rowan was kicking her ass because she needed it. Badly. Oh, and can we talk about the decline of Chaol? Why ruin such an amazing character with such fear/hatred/bigotry? I was not happy.

The second half, though, I was enthralled. Details and secrets that I’d guessed were finally revealed, and expanded upon. And we had a new evil to contend with as well. Not to mention the revelation of the taint of the valg in their world. Finally, Celaena was more like herself, ready to face things and fight, show the world what she can do.  I can’t say more because it’s all spoileriffic but let’s just say that the end of this book really salvaged the entire story. I was once again interested in what was going on, eager to pick up the next installment.
