Review: Bait by Joseph Eastwood

Joseph Eastwood
Published: August 29th, 2012

Radley is a vampire with a thirst for mermaid blood, yet the touch of water wreaks havoc on his skin. Katya and Yana are mermaids, they thirst for legs and being able to walk again. And Alena, she's the witch who made them all that way.

Only one of them can get their own way, but who will it be?

This is the first short story from the anthology, Over My Spilled Blood. (Goodreads)

I received Lumen from Mr. Eastwood late last month, with a promise I would review it. But since I'm a slow reader, and I'm not done, I decided I'd download his latest short story and review this one. You know, just to satisfy his curiosity until I finish his other book, it has nothing to do with me actually liking or wanting to read it, pfft, what? *sarcasm*

Anyway. Bait is a short, short-short-short-short story about vampires, and mermaids, and evil. I can't tell you much, seeing how it's about 18 pages long and 300-some-odd locations on the Kindle, but I can tell you it was surprisingly well-developed. Short stories don't usually have a braid going on, and this one does. There were a few strands that had me going, "And why is this guy standing outside the window like a creep?" but it didn't really take away from it. This story really could've been flipped and turned into a full-length novel very easily.

Weirdly enough, I think it was written better when following Katya and Yana, but not so much Radley. I'm not sure why, honestly, it just seemed... I don't know. The words seemed to flow easier, like maybe the author enjoyed writing for them more? Don't quote me- Just how it came across the Kindle to me.

For a short, I really liked it. And I'm glad it has a sequel; you can't seriously leave me there... -_-

My Rating:

Joseph Eastwood is the eldest of five siblings. He lives and grew up in Lancaster, England, where he also attends the University of Cumbria, studying English Literature and Creative Writing.

He has always had a giant creative connection in his life, from drawing and writing to having an eclectic taste in music and reading a wide range of books, which he hopes reflects in his own writing. He also loves watching sci-fi, supernatural and fantasy based TV shows and films. Among some of his favourites are Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and True Blood. As well as those he loves dramas, like The Good Wife and Desperate Housewives.

Joseph is either busy doing edits and writing or trying to get some university work done. He lives for creativity, striving to be different and thinking up new hoops for his characters to jump through.
