Girls *Heart* Books Blog Tours: Daughter of the Sea by Kristen Day: Review

Chosen
Daughters of the Sea Series #3
By: Kristen Day
Published: January 29th, 2013

The essence of who we are lies not in what we have, but in what we are willing to give up. Because in the end, Time and Tide wait for no one.

After sacrificing all that she had, the evil princess of the Underworld is still successful in her bid to tear Finn and Stasia's life. In the midst of her search to reclaim him, Stasia is summoned to the island nation of Cyprus to take part in an age-old ritual; unveiling the missing pieces of her ancestry and re-igniting an ancient war. As she struggles to both save Finn's soul and free Carmen's mind, Stasia bravery and determination will be pushed to its breaking point. A dark storm is forming on the horizon, and the forces who are vying to destroy her may be much closer than she thinks. Destiny weaves a sticky web of evil, betrayal, and revenge that can only be undone by the purity of love and the soul's unyielding will to survive. In the last installment of the Daughters of the Sea trilogy, the past will collide with the present as Stasia's future hangs in the balance. The prophecy that paved the way for her new life may indeed be the very last thing that strips her of the ones she loves the most.
Chosen is the third book in the AMAZING Daughters of the Sea series by the FANTASTIC, wonderful, sweet, talented Kristen Day. I could go on and on about how much I ADORE this series and this author and these characters that she’s brought to life. It’s impossible to find words that adequately express my undying love and gratitude to this woman for this series.

Chosen starts off right where Awaken left off, thank goodness (the cliffhanger ending kept me up a few nights after I finished it). And the action picks back up right from the start of Chosen. This book was packed full of romance, action and humor. The twists and turns kept me on my toes and left me guessing about what could possibly happen next.

I can’t rave enough about the continued development of the characters in this series. With each installment Ms. Day brings even more depth to the characters we’ve grown to love. I love the relationship between Stasia and her roommates just as much as the relationship between Stasia and Finn. There really isn’t a single thing that I didn’t like about this book. If you haven’t started reading this series yet, you need to go out NOW, buy the books and get reading my friends!!

My Rating:

I am a southern belle at heart with a crazy streak that desperately tries to escape at every opportunity. I love all things nostalgic, rustic, and quirky. I've been told I see the world through rose-colored glasses, but I prefer to think of them as kaleidoscope glasses - swirling and morphing reality into something I can digest (who hasn't pretended those pasty lima beans were really kiwi strawberry jelly beans?).

I am the author of the DAUGHTERS OF THE SEA series, which includes FORSAKEN, AWAKEN, and CHOSEN. I love all books, but really enjoy writing young adult, paranormal romances. I've loved to write for as long as I can remember. My first published work was my poem RED in second grade (you guessed it - it was a poem about the color red - life altering, I know) that won me 5 gold stars and a spot in my elementary school's poetry book. That's when my addiction to the written word officially began. I was the only kid in fifth grade that actually enjoyed diagramming sentences. Go ahead and laugh - its okay.

When I'm not writing I'm making jewelry, painting, drinking sweet tea, watching the discovery channel, or going on random adventures in the mountains of North Carolina with my amazing husband.

Before I begin my review I want to say Ms. Day is equal parts EVIL and ANGELIC.

You may wonder why I say this. Well here. She is evil because, well, read this.. I really can't say why she is evil besides the fact she made me cry enough to actually refill the ocean after global warming, BUT she is also angelic because she let the voices in her head convince her to continue this series. And for that I will love her forever.

Although, I will defend her slightly because IF this had been the end (*queue scream sobs at the THOUGHT of an end*), it would've been a beautiful end to a beautiful trilogy.. I'm really not sure how she is going to move along, to be honest.. But I am dying of curiosity, and I will DEFINITELY be moving along with the next book! And all of Kristen's books here on out.

Day creates magic in her writing. The love she has for this profession flows through the page and into the reader, which makes it an honor to even read these books. I am so looking forward to the paperbacks coming out, just so I can give them a face-front-spot on my shelves. I ADORE this series, and this book was absolutely stunning, just like the last two. :) I cannot tell you enough, and I cannot tell you all much...or I'll ruin the whole series... Damn... hehe

And because we love you all, here's a WONDERFUL giveaway! <3

Friday Fever

Lana and I have decided to start a new feature here at Girls *Heart* Books, it's called Friday Fever. Every Friday we will showcase one of our favorite steamy and/or romantic scenes from the YA & New Adult universe. You know the ones we are talking about; those that get your pulse thumping and your temperature rising. Enjoy.

Lana and I are both a teensy bit obsessed with Forsaken by Kristen Day. When discussing what steamy scenes we wanted to feature this week, we both immediately said "that really hot scene from Forsaken" Then we realized we were talking about two separate scenes and decided we love you guys enough to share them BOTH.  So, here are our picks for this week!

“Anastasia…” he whispered. I heard the longing in his voice as he lightly ran his thumb over my lips. His eyes took me in and with no fight left, I gave in to them. The smell of the salt water that clung to his body filled my senses and I let the sound of the ocean caress my ears. He leaned closer, holding my gaze. His closeness made my anger evaporate, replaced by a desire so strong, it threatened to consume me. All I could think about were his lips, inches from my own.
“Kiss me…” I heard myself whisper. His other arm wrapped around my waist, pulling me to him abruptly. The next instant his mouth crushed mine with such hunger, my own desire overpowered me and I was lost in it. I wrapped my arms around his neck as the heat of his skin burned against mine. The coolness of his wet hair sizzled in my fingers as I clung to him. His lips parted mine as I felt his tongue deepening the kiss. It did something to me I had no control over. I wanted more. I wanted all of him. Still kissing me, he easily lifted me up and I wrapped my legs around his waist. He carried me farther up toward the dunes and I could feel the muscles in his shoulders as he lowered me down onto the cool sand. He gazed down at me with stormy, hooded eyes and I saw a trace of sadness in them again. He looked at war with himself, but finally pressed down on top of me, slipping one arm under the small of my back, pulling me against him again. My entire body responded to his touch. I ran my fingertips down his back and felt him shudder. Every kiss burned hotter than the one before. Every touch lit a new fire on my skin. (Kindle location 1481)

Suddenly, he cloaked us and we were covered with sparkles from head to toe. Finn stopped dancing abruptly and pulled me close; his intentions clear in his hooded eyes. An emotional frenzy sparked inside me and my breath came faster as he leaned in ever so slowly. His mouth brushed mine lightly, enticing me. I grinned and took the bait, kissing his bottom lip, and then biting it gently before pulling back. Taking my challenge, he delicately kissed the skin beneath my ear down to my collarbone. Goose bumps raised on my skin as every sensation became heightened. Couples danced around us, completely oblivious that we were making out right in front of them. The thought sent a thrill through me. He touched my necklace, looking at me with warmth.

“It looks magnificent on you,” he said in a low voice and a thought occurred to me.

“How did you know it would match my dress?” A forced whisper was all I could manage.

He paused, his eyes filled with desire, “You aren’t the only one with foresight, Pasha.” My eyes widened, but before I could respond, he kissed me with a searing urgency that made my entire body ache with longing. He broke our kiss, grabbed my hand and led me towards the same door we had entered through earlier. He pulled me down a different hallway and we fell against a wall. I was trapped against it from the pressure of his body on mine. The flame burning inside me threatened to explode into a raging inferno, as his hands seemed to be everywhere at once. Wow that is just HOT! And it gets better but we can't give everything away, now can we?

Forsaken

A Daughters of the Sea Novel

By: Kristen Day

Self Published

Once you’ve been touched by darkness, it never leaves you…

Abandoned by her parents as an infant; seventeen year old Hannah spent her childhood wading through countless foster families until being adopted by the Whitmans three years ago. Unfortunately, Atlanta’s high society wasn’t quite ready for Hannah…or the strange events that plague her.

Chilling visions of murder, unexplained hallucinations, and a dark, mysterious guy who haunts her nightmares all culminate to set in motion a journey of self-discovery that will challenge everything she’s ever believed; not to mention her sanity.

Sent to live at The House of Lorelei on Bald Head Island, NC for ‘kids like her’, Hannah quickly realizes things are not what they seem. Her fellow ‘disturbed’ teens are actually the descendents of mythical Sea Gods and Goddesses. And so is she.

But when Finn, the ghost from her dreams, appears in the flesh; her nightmares become reality and her dark visions begin coming true. Inexplicably drawn to him, she can’t deny the dangerous hold he has on her heart. The deadly secrets he harbors will ultimately test her courage and push the boundaries of her love.

She must decide if she is ready to embrace the ancient legend she is prophesized to be a part of. The fate of all the descendents will forever depend upon it.
Forsaken is the first novel in the Daughters of the Sea series by Kristen Day.  When I read the synopsis of this book on Goodreads I was instantly intrigued. When I learned that YARN was doing a blog tour I signed up right away. I enjoyed every second of this book.

We see the story through the eyes of Hannah, the main character. She is a wonderful character; tough but sweet, sassy, brave and funny. You can't help but love her as you follow her journey to discover who she really is. She is my favorite character in the story; she is a take charge kind of girl. If there is a crisis, she doesn't cry and get hysterical, she figures out what she can do to help. It's so nice to see a heroine who doesn't depend on others to get her out of trouble.

My next favorite character is Finn, Hannah's love interest. He is an enigma of sorts when we first meet him and it's easy to see why Hannah is drawn to him.  He is insanely hot, yes but there's more to him than that. He's brave and he'd do anything to help Hannah, but he also helps her  figure out how to save herself and I love him for that. He isn't some neanderthal type trying to keep her in a gilded cage to protect her in the name of love.

Full of suspense and packed with action and romance, this book is a fast paced thrill ride and I could not stop reading it once I'd started.  The end was a slight cliff hanger and I'm now anxiously awaiting the next volume in this exciting new series.
My Rating:
Again, here I sit, following Mel around like a puppy so I can continue to read read read like a maniac. I shall be honest- When I read the summary for Forsaken, I sighed somewhat. "Oh, goodie, a Percy Jackson rip-off. Yay..." But I bit my tongue and read it (who am I to complain about a book?), and as much as I hate being wrong, I am actually happy to say I was DEAD wrong about this book.

Stasia has got to be one of the fiercest characters I've read about this year. She's a sassy little firecracker who has every reason to curl up under the bed and cry forever, but no. She is strong, and I admire that about her. I'm honestly not sure I could get up in the morning after everything she's been through, and there she goes- Somehow finding out all this information and remaining sane. None of the other characters fall flat, either. Phoebe, Willow and Carmen are all totally unique, and somehow get along well with one another. None of her characters act alike, and none of them fall all over the place, as if they were just put there because Day liked her names and couldn't narrow it down.

But all the girls aside, umm.. Finn. Holy. Crap. Can I have him, please? I need a visual aid, mostly because we need a Team Finn button down on that little Book Boys roll down there. Who doesn't love the bad boy? The very, very bad boy? The could-possibly-be-a-murderer bad boy who has really pretty blue eyes? "Possible murderer" get your attention? Oh, good. No, I'm not telling you- Just read it yourself. You will not regret it!

Definitely getting put on my "Favorites" shelf! Cannot wait for the next installment!

Forsaken by Kristen Day

"He turned toward me, "That's an honor I don't deserve," his eyes softened and he ran a finger over my lips, "but I'll spend every minute of the rest of my life trying to earn it." What was left of the walls around my heart melted away, collecting in a puddle at my feet."
