Sizzling PR: Unraveled by S.X. Bradley: Review & Interview
UnraveledBy: S.X. BradleyPublished: February 8th, 2013 by Evernight TeenSixteen year old math whiz, Autumn, spends her days reading about serial killers and dreaming of becoming an FBI Profiler. She never dreams her first case will be so personal. Her world is shattered when she comes home from school and discovers her murdered sister's body on the living room floor. When the initial evidence points to a burglary gone wrong, Autumn challenges the police's theory because of the personal nature of the crime. Thinking that finding the killer will bring her family back together, she conducts her own investigation using her affinity for math and forensics, but her plan backfires and her obsession with the case further splinters her family. When her investigation reveals the killer is someone she knows, Autumn offers herself up as bait and sets a dangerous trap to unmask his true nature and to obtain a confession for her sister's murder.
Unraveled is the first in a series by S.X. Bradley. The story is told in the first person from our protagonist, Autumn, who is the prime suspect in the murder of her older sister, track star Celeste. Autumn has always dreamed of being an FBI Profiler, so when the police are going way off base, she decides to take matters into her own hands-- In a way that will leave readers on the edge of their seat in a full blown panic attack.
We had a little stumble in this tour and it fell off our calendar (so sorry to Sizzling PR and S.X. Bradley x_x), so I had thought I'd have to go lock myself in my room and read it all in a day so we could still get our review in. But that was no problem. The book is fast paced and keeps your attention from chapter one all the way to the end. I can honestly tell you all, no fluff, no filter... this book is frickin' AWESOME!!!
My favorite books are actually about humans, and I adore murder mysteries, so this is my exact cup of tea-- horrible, terrible misery, perfect detail, heart-stopping suspense, fantastic twists, and it's not overloaded with distracting romance (praise the lord). One of my new favorites!
My Rating:

And now, Mel's interview with S.X. Bradley!
*Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I grew up in South Texas, about ten miles from the U.S.-Mexican border. As a child I spent the summers in Mexico with my grandparents and extended family. During these vacations, I frequently created mysteries for my siblings and cousins to solve. These mysteries were my first stories. Nancy Drew soon became my childhood hero and inspiration to write mysteries for young adults. When I'm not writing or studying, you can find me looking after my personal mini-zoo which consists of two fish, one thief of a dog, and hermit crabs.
I love estates sales, traveling, spending the time with my daughter, and discovering new books.
*When did you know you wanted to be an author?
I was about 8 or 9 and really into Nancy Drew. I was
totally lost in the mysteries and knew that’s what I wanted to do.
*Do you like to listen to music while you write, or do you
prefer the quiet?
I make a playlist for my novels.
I pick a particular song when writing a type of scene. It becomes a sound track
for that scene.
*It seems like authors break down into two groups, plotters
(authors who outline and are extremely detail oriented) and pantsers (authors
who are more ‘go with the flow’ and kind of fly by the seat of their
pants)-which group do you fit into?
I’m a pantser.
I have a beginning and end in mind, but really let the characters write the
middle and take me to place I would have never imagined. I do start to plot
close to the end to make sure I get there in the way that I want.
*What authors have influenced you & your writing?
Edgar Allan Poe, Lisa Gardner, Tess Gerritsen, Gayle
Forman, Jeffrey Deaver, and Karin Slaughter. Each one is a master at writing in
their genre and do it by creating unforgettable characters and weaving great
plots.
*What was your favorite book as a child? I loved Louisa May Alcott’s, Little Women. I thought Jo was the coolest girl on earth. She was
strong, a free spirit, and liked to write. I wanted to be
just like her.
*If you could spend one day with any literary character, who
would you choose and what would you do together?
I’d
pick Tess Gerritsen’s Rizzoli & Isles characters. I’d want to go with them
on their investigations, and then hang out with them. They are fun, smart,
courageous female characters and I really like their friendship.
*Lana and I both have an unending love for really good
cheesecake; is there a dessert you can’t say no to?
Chocolate
cake with chocolate icing. I’m a chocoholic.
*Can you tell us what’s next for you?
I’m working on the sequel to Unraveled.
It’s actually my MFA thesis and I’m almost done with the first draft.

At first he doesn’t take their threats seriously, but then his tires are slashed, someone tries to poison him, and one of the girls turns up dead. And now an Excerpt from Player:
Someone else came over to offer Nadine their congratulations, so Josh said goodbye and went to his locker to get his backpack. He figured he would meet up with Andrea and Rosa in the parking lot. He fumbled with the combination before finally getting the door to swing open. Something glittered on the top shelf and caught his eye. He reached for it, and a small scrap of paper fluttered to the floor.
At first he wasn’t sure what he was holding. It was a pink plastic tiara with some big gaudy plastic jewels. It was the type of thing he had seen in dollar stores for little girls’ birthday parties. It was practically broken in half, and the edges were sharp. Josh pricked his finger on the jagged point, and a few drops of blood welled from the small wound. He put his finger in his mouth as he bent to pick up the paper that had fallen. When he read it, the broken crown suddenly made sense and he wondered how he could have been so naïve. He should have realized from the instant he saw it what it meant.
“Josh decided to play around
Now one of his girls is under the ground.
Another has a big bump on her head.
And by the end of the dance, the queen will be dead.”

And now an Excerpt from Morrigan:
“Guardians!” A low snarl emanated from the back of his throat. “What are you doing with Guardians?”
“Stop it! Sit down!”
Morrigan wasn’t sure who she was addressing, the man or the animals. Luckily, they both obeyed her command. She stepped in between them to avoid any further confrontations. The cats took a seat on either side her legs, but their posture hardly relaxed. They still glared warily at the newcomer, even though their hisses died down to an occasional soft growl.
“Dirty, filthy beasts!” Tiarn snarled as he climbed to his feet. “I hate Guardians.”
“They’re just little cats,” Morrigan told him. “What’s the big deal?”
“Just cats! Hah!” He was standing at a careful distance, even though they had started licking their paws nonchalantly. “They are much more than simple cats! Though even those I find distasteful.”
Morrigan narrowed her eyes. “What do you mean?”
“Never mind. It does not matter.” Tiarn dismissed her question with a wave of his hand. “They are not coming with us.
“They most certainly are coming!”
Tiarn growled again. “I beg to differ with you, Your Highness. They would only get in the way. Possibly even get killed.”
Danu raised her head from her grooming to hiss at him again, as though she had taken that last statement as a personal threat. The strange reaction of her faithful sidekicks made Morrigan wonder again just how much Tiarn could be trusted. She also wondered why, when she wasn’t sure she could trust him, she still felt the undeniable urge to wrap her arms around his neck and kiss him.
“If they stay here alone, they’ll definitely get killed or at least sent to the pound,” Morrigan told him. “I can’t let that happen. So, they’re coming. End of story.”
Tiarn’s eyes flashed dangerously, and he looked like he wanted to argue, but thought better of it. “Very well, Princess. Bring your mongrel felines. Just keep in mind that Guardians and lycans do not mix well.”
“Lycans?” Morrigan repeated.
A sick feeling started to settle in her stomach, as the truth of his words sunk in. It all started to make sense—his hairy arms and chest, his reaction to the cats, even his earlier comment about smelling her out. Her dark knight had a much darker side than she had ever seen in her dreams.
“Why yes, Your Majesty. Did you not realize? You are a witch and a sorceress. And I, your faithful traveling companion, am a lycan—a werewolf.”

And now an Excerpt from Solstice:
She tried to breathe slowly and calmly, not for herself but to listen for her child. She just wanted a sign that she was still alive. Perhaps a cooing of some sort, but it didn’t happen. Instead she listened to what sounded like flesh ripping and bones cracking. The mother wanted to believe that it was fabric caught in some metal making the sound, but she knew better. In fact, she knew too much. As swollen and in pain as she was, she knew that her newborn child was not human. Not in the way that she would have planned. It hurt when she breathed. Her insides were mangled from the sudden growth of her child inside her womb. It especially hurt on the right side of her body. What she may have known deep down is that her lung was not in the same place it was before. In fact, one of her ribs; the fifth rib from the top, had broken at the curve and punctured the lung. Her stomach alone was almost mush while her kidneys were pushed out further from where they needed to be, so much so that they were torn from their renal arteries. The fact that she was alive at all was a miracle itself.
The mother hung upside down for four hours in the ambulance until the gurney came loose from the floorboard and fell to the street pavement. Her knees broke in half because her legs were strapped to the stirrups. The pain was as unbearable as she thought, and she let out a soft cry. At least she thought she did. She could not scream or even talk anymore, and any chance of her getting help had died along with her. The mother’s last breath was coming, and with the last breath she heard a whimper next to her telling her that she was sorry and didn’t mean to hurt her mommy.
The mother’s eyes filled with tears and with her last breath she told her, “I know, and mommy loves you.” Her mouth was moving but no sound came out. Her own daughter could not hear her mother’s voice. As she was dying, she watched her daughter walk out of the wreckage with the policeman’s coat and hat, walking with bandages covering her feet to keep them protected. ”My smart little girl,” she thought. Her daughter turned around with the sunlight behind her head and cracked a small smile with the right side of her face. Her daughter heard her, just not in the way we hear things. Maybe that too was a miracle.
The mother died a minute later, but she will always have the memory no matter what lies in the afterlife. Her favorite thing in the physical world was the sun in the morning and the fact that her daughter was in front of it, illuminating her little body, such a brilliant picture in her mind as she left this world. It reminded her of summer.

Book Blitz: "Phantom" by Laura DeLuca
The “Phantom” was a musical phenomenon that Rebecca had always found enchanting. She had no idea that her life was about to mirror the play that was her obsession. When her high school drama club chooses “Phantom” as their annual production, Rebecca finds herself in the middle of an unlikely love triangle and the target of a sadistic stalker who uses the lines from the play as their calling card.Rebecca lands the lead role of Christine, the opera diva, and like her character, she is torn between her two co-stars—Tom the surfer and basketball star who plays the lovable hero, and Justyn, the strangely appealing Goth who is more than realistic in the role of the tortured artist.Almost immediately after casting, strange things start to happen both on and off the stage. Curtains fall. Mirrors are shattered. People are hurt in true phantom style. They all seem like accidents until Rebecca receives notes and phone calls that hint at something more sinister. Is Justyn bringing to life the twisted character of the phantom? Or in real life are the roles of the hero and the villain reversed? Rebecca doesn’t know who to trust, but she knows she’s running out of time as she gets closer and closer to opening night. Only when the mask is stripped away, will the twenty first century phantom finally be revealed.
Buy links: Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Smashword
And now an Excerpt from Phantom:
The orchestra tuned for its virtuoso, and Justyn stood ready. But no one else was ready for the magical performance he began. Beside her, Carmen was rambling on about something mundane. Rebecca elbowed her to silence so she could listen to the perfectly thrilling tenor. As she listened to the song unfold, the world around her started to slip away. Gone was the high school auditorium. Gone were the rowdy teenagers. The Gothic stranger on the stage had become the embodiment of Erik, and Rebecca watched him in all his dark glory, belting out his tormented love through the words of his song. And she was as breathless with wonder as Christine herself must have been when the masked stranger serenaded her in the candlelit labyrinth of the opera house. In that moment, Justyn wasn’t just portraying the phantom. Justyn was the phantom.
“Let the music touch your soul.
Let the darkness make you whole.
Do not fear what is unknown.
Your true path has now been shown.
Listen to the words I sing.
Embrace the peace that night will bring.”
As he continued to sing in his deep but somehow angelic voice, Rebecca found that she couldn’t tear her eyes away from him. With every line, her heart began to beat faster. She truly felt the arms of night wrapping her in a warm embrace. She could almost feel the hands of the phantom glide along her body as the words poured forth. The music caressed her. It possessed her—mind, body and soul. Each word left her longing, yearning for more.
She was gawking so obviously, it was hardly surprising when Justyn felt her eyes on him and steadily met her gaze. She realized her mouth was hanging open in stunned awe, and she quickly snapped it shut. His lips moved into just a small hint of a smile. He never took his eyes off her while he sang the final verse, making her cheeks flush to the point that she felt almost feverish. But it wasn’t embarrassment but excitement, arousal even, which was sending her mind spinning in so many directions.
When the song was over, and Rebecca had recovered just a hint of her composure, she couldn’t help but burst into a healthy round of applause. A few scattered people joined in, including Debbie and Carmen after she nudged them in the ribs. But only Miss King seemed to truly appreciate the brilliance of his talent as much as Rebecca did.
“That was amazing, Justyn!” the teacher gushed.
“Lord Justyn,” he corrected as he stepped down from the stage.
A few others complimented him as well, but he took in all in stride. In fact, his serious expression never faltered as he stepped down from the stage. He seemed almost bored, like it was all he could do to hold back a yawn, despite the smiles and words of encouragement.
But not everyone in the crowd was pleased as Justyn glided down the aisle, so ethereal in his dark garments that he still resonated the spirit of the Opera Ghost. Miss King might have been excited about the newest male addition to her cast after being limited for many years, but Tom and his group of boisterous companions glared at him as he passed them by. Jay sneered and tossed a balled up piece of paper in Justyn’s direction, but the Goth was quick, and caught it in his hand without missing a beat.
“I think you dropped something,” he said.
His speaking voice was no less melodic than his singing voice, but something about his tone made Rebecca shiver. He tossed the paper back at Jay, who was nowhere near as coordinated as Justyn. He practically fell off his seat in his efforts to catch it.
“Hey vampire,” Tom called when Justyn went to walk away. “Are you sure you can handle the competition?”
Justyn smiled, a cool, sarcastic half-smile, and crossed his arms over his chest. “Are you?”
Miss King didn’t notice the short confrontation, and Justyn vanished from the auditorium as quickly and mysteriously as he had appeared. Only Rebecca had noticed the very real tension between the two boys. She wondered if it was a bad omen for them to start off the production with hard feelings and envy. That could only lead to trouble. The kind of trouble that could end with someone getting hurt. The kind of trouble that Rebecca would do whatever it took to avoid.

“Alexandros,” I said in my most alluring voice as I walked over to join him on the couch. I dropped the linen blazer I had on, leaving my pink tank top and jeans as he turned and looked at me as if his curiosity was piqued by the change in my voice.
“Megan, is everything all right?” Alex asked, closing his laptop.
I sat next to him and pressed my body against his as I purred.
“I’m fine.” I slid my hand on his knee before moving higher.
His hand met mine at the top of his thigh. I leaned forward and brushed my lips on his cheek. Then he turned to let his lips meet mine. We were instantly engulfed in one another. As I climbed on top of him, he began to slide the strap of my tank top down my arm. My body trembled with excitement as we both moaned with pleasure. When both straps hung on my arm he slowly slipped it over my head and dropped it to the floor. Alex kissed the top of my breasts that poked out the top of my strapless bra, then paused to look up at me.
“Are you sure this is what you want?” he whispered.
I was so caught up in the moment I couldn’t even speak, so I just nodded as I began to unbutton his shirt. When I got to the last button, the unthinkable happened—Alex’s phone rang.
“No,” I whispered, kissing him again.
The phone stopped ringing as he laid me down on the couch. I got excited when he kissed my belly button. He unbuttoned my jeans and caressed my legs. Then the phone rang again. His eyes strayed from the hot pink panties under my jeans.
“I have to, love,” Alex insisted, grabbing the phone.
I sighed in frustration, watching him stand up to take the call. While he talked, he glanced at me with a perplexed look on his face. I sat up as he left the room. I grabbed my blouse, went to my own room, and slammed the door to make a point. Less than a minute later, there was a knock at my door.
“Come in!” I huffed.
Alex opened the door slowly and stepped into the room. “I just wanted to say goodnight, love,” he said from the doorway.
“Sure, goodnight,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“I am truly sorry. I know that you are upset by your tone of voice, and I will make this up to you,” he said. He turned to leave with his head hanging down.
I relented. “I am not upset with you. I understand that you had to take it. People don’t call back-to-back unless it’s an emergency,” I said as I looked down at the floor.
“Yes, you are right, love. It was a bit of an emergency. I have to leave earlier than I thought,” Alex said as he came back into the room.
“When do you have to go?” I asked, my eyes meeting his.
“Redmond will be at the airport shortly with the jet. But I want you to rest now. I will see you when I return.”
I stood up. “I’m coming with you, at least to the airport.”
“Very well, love; we will leave shortly.” Alex touched my shoulder and then walked away from me and out of the room immediately.
I felt confused and rejected. Again. For the second time tonight. Dammit! How could he go so cold so quickly? Maybe my feeling about him and us was wrong—but it felt right!
We left for the airport around midnight. I wanted to meet the elusive Redmond, Master-of-Moment-Ruination. I climbed into the back seat of the Benz and sat next to Alex. We held hands as we rode to the airport. He mumbled something about being gone for two days, but I didn’t care: my feelings were hurt and I questioned my own feelings for him at this moment.
Lola James has been reading romance novels since her teens, and fell in love with the paranormal after discovering Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Her love of the dark worlds of vampires and witches, as well as her fascination with Greek mythology led her to create the Spellbound Series, an ongoing Paranormal Romance combining all of the above into tales of suspense with a little bit of humor in an Urban Fantasy setting.
A long time lover of reading and writing with a passion for a great story, James became discouraged by the complicated and arbitrary publishing process, James had initially set down her laptop and her hopes of being a writer. However, with the purchase of her first e-reader, James became re-energized by the new possibilities for an undiscovered author to reach the masses. Dusting off her keyboard she finally finished Bound to Remember, the first book of the Spellbound Series and self-published it. Energized and ambitious, James is now hard at work on both the Spellbound Series as well as the Fate Series, a paranormal romance about dreams and what happens if they come true.
Living in Southern California with her two beautiful children, James finds time to write in between her full-time job as a mother as well as her other full-time job as an HR manager, as well as her academic schedule as she studies for her Master’s degree which she hopes to complete in 2013. With the success of Bound to Remember, James hopes to continue to reach an audience that will allow her to leave her HR job and focus on her writing as a full time career.
