February Author Appreciation w/ Giveaway: For the marvelous Stacey Rourke!

Keeping up with our monthly Author Appreciation events, Mel and I have decided that we would dedicate February to the hilarious and wonderful Stacey Rourke. :)

Stacey Rourke is the author of The Gryphon Series (The Conduit, Embrace, and Sacrifice [available next month!]), and The Sidekick Chronicles (A Gryphon Series short). While I have just started Sacrifice for an upcoming blog tour and should not be talking about it yet anyway (oh. em. geeeeee!), I can tell you this entire series is superb. I have adored every page I've read, and I actually have not wanted to punch Celeste yet... I know- weird. The books are told from Celeste's perspective and tell us about her life as "The Chosen One". Rourke managed to make this topic fun for me again (I hate these things.. They're all the same- whiny protagonist who sits around for days upon days while things get worse and worse and doesn't do anything until their boy/girlfriend is in danger blah...blah...blah...That is not the case here) and I can honestly say this is probably one of my favorite series.

But putting the awesomeness that is The Gryphon Series aside, Stacey is awesome in and of herself, too. She is super sweet and really cares about her readers and reviewers, and a total riot-- She makes me laugh any time we've chatted. I adore her and her work and will be a lifelong fan, for sure!

Now if you all will excuse me, I'm gonna go read some more of Sacrifice ;)

Because we love you guys, and we love Stacey-you get to enter this kick ass giveaway!! Stacey was sweet enough to donate to the cause so be sure to thank her!

For those of you who have been totally ignoring my constant fangirling, here are the summaries for the Gryphon series!

The Conduit
The Gryphon Series Book #1
By Stacey Rourke
Published in 2011 by Anchor Publishing

All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.

While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad and exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn't always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn't have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others' nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever--their grandmother in a leopard print bikini.

Embrace
The Gryphon Series #2
By Stacey Rourke
Published May 10th, 2012, by Anchor Group

Whether she likes it or not, eighteen year old Celeste Garrett has come to terms with being the Chose One. She knew having a "normal life" would be tricky, between intense training sessions and epic demonic battles, but she didn't know at what cost it would come. That is, until a dear friend is harmed by the malicious forces hunting her.

Now, she'd like nothing more than to retreat into her hermit lifestyle to prevent anyone else from getting hurt. But startling revelations, amazing new abilities, and mortifying moments in front of insanely hot guys won't allow time for that. Soon, Celese finds herself surrounded by darkness and wondering who she can trust--if anyone.

Writing is something I have always done. I can remember in elementary school creating stories that I would stand up and read aloud to my classmates…whether they liked it or not.   As I grew older I didn’t flaunt my writing as freely. It became something I did just for me to vent my teenage angst, or chronicle my journey to adulthood. I never thought about becoming a writer because that title prompted the visual of a grey-haired man in a tweed smoking jacket with suede elbow patches, slaving over an old fashion typewriter while puffing away on a pipe. No way was that stuffy kind of life for me. (Plus tweed is itchy.) Instead I wanted to be in the spotlight! I wanted to be–pause for dramatic effect–an actress!  I gave it my best shot, too. Got about as far as any aspiring actress can get in Flint, Michigan. Which is exactly no where. But I did get two great things out of my time delving into the theatrical world; I gained the ability to act out the scenes I write to make sure they’re believable (yes, I really do that and no, you can’t watch) and I met my amazing husband.

My theater ambitions behind me, I decided to do the “mature,” “grown up” thing and went back to college. As I worked toward my Bachelor’s degree in marketing I did a lot of writing.   Essays, research papers, PowerPoint presentations. All of it mandatory, none of it what I would ever call fun. Even then, becoming a writer never entered my mind. No, then I was going to be a business tycoon…or somethin’.
Truth be told, I never picked writing. It picked me. During my time as a stay at home mom I needed an outlet to give me a mental break from diapers, formula and midnight feedings. That’s when my hands found their way back to the keyboard. Story ideas began coming at such an incessant rate that my rapidly clicking fingers couldn’t keep up. Post-It notes and scrapes of paper with story ideas decorated every inch of our house. In mid-conversation with my husband I would dart off to jot down things that would come to me. Sweet guy my hubby is, he would just shake his head at my obvious rudeness and hold my place in the conversation.

My first book was completed for an entire year before I told anyone about it. I outed myself as an author and then sent out my first round of query letters to literary agents. Surely, it would be picked up immediately and become an overnight success! Yeah, not so much. For two years I got rejection, after rejection, after rejection, after rejection…you get the idea. Thankfully with the ever increasing pile of rejections came feedback. I digested all the suggestions and applied the usable ones to my manuscript. Little by little, the rough edges were chipped away and the diamond shone through. The work paid off when I received an email from a publisher offering me a contract on The Conduit.

It’s been a long road, and it ain’t over yet. But now, at thirty-mumble, mumble years old I finally know what I wanna be when I grow up–-a writer.

Friday Fever: ReAwakened by Ada Adams w/ Giveaway

Friday Fever is a weekly event hosted here at Girls *Heart* Books. Every Friday, we will showcase one of our favorite steamy and/or romantic scenes. You know the ones we're talking about; those that get your pulse thumping and your temperature rising. This month we're showcasing the Angel Creek Series as part of our Author Appreciation. Enjoy!

For the first time since we began our sparring match, I was suddenly aware of him—all of him. Aware of the soft black curls tumbling across his forehead; aware of the firm muscles on his chest and stomach; aware of the intense heat in his silver eyes. Most of all, I was aware of the strong current coursing through my body, luring me toward him. Without further hesitation, he laced his fingers through my hair and pulled me deeper into him. His lips collided against mine, drawing me out of the darkness toward a warm, safe light. With a simple kiss, he had managed to dispel so much of my pain.

I so love Dawn & Sebastian! The wait for ReBorn might just kill me!!

January Author Appreciation w/ Giveaway: Happy Birthday, Ada Adams

Author Appreciation was something we used to do every month and unfortunately as we became busier, it fell by the wayside. However, after some discussion, Lana and I decided we really missed shining the spotlight on awesome authors we love. So, we're bringing it back and dare I say it, it will be better than ever. And we're kicking it off in grand fashion with the very lovely and talented birthday girl, Ada Adams.

Ada Adams is the author of the phenomenal Angel Creek series. The series is about vampires, but with a new twist. She has made the vampire genre fun to read again in my opinion, which I honestly didn't think could be done. For that reason alone, I would love her. But I am so far from done.  Along with being one of the sweetest people I've ever encountered, Ada genuinely appreciates her readers.

We bloggers appreciate her as well, and I have a few messages from some other lovely bloggers who wanted to show some love to Ada on her birthday:

Happy, Happy Birthday, Ada!!! I hope your day is full of wonderful birthday wishes coming true! Thanks for supporting my blog! You rock my socks off! Cheers! ~Jessy Johnson, BookEnd 2 BookEnd

Happy Birthday Ada! ~Tam's of Tam's Two Cents

Happy Birthday, Ada! ~ Rose from Rose's Book Corner

Happy Birthday, Ada! We are sending lots of happy thoughts your way and we hope you have a magnificent day. Thank you SO much for all you do & most of all, just for being you. Of course, we love you because you brought us Sebastian, too..but we promise that's not the only reason!

And now we will celebrate Ada's birthday by adding a giveaway! Good luck! This is open internationally!

November Author Appreciation: Spotlight on Kristen Day & Giveaway

First off, Lana and I wanted to let you guys know we realize we are way behind in our monthly author appreciation duties, but in our defense, we have been insanely busy. We're ready to make it up to you guys though. This month, we are dying to tell you all about an author we both absolutely adore. Kristen Day, author of the Daughters of the Sea trilogy, is one of our new favorite authors and we were lucky enough to snag an interview with her to share with you guys!

Kristen Day hooked me from the very first line of Forsaken (Book 1 in the Daughters of the Sea trilogy) and she hasn't let me go yet. I am now eagerly awaiting the final book in the series. Her storytelling is enchanting and her characters are completely captivating. I dare you to read these books and not fall in love with them and their brilliant author.

Now without further ado, I give you our interview with Kristen Day!

Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us, Kristen. We really appreciate it!

*Can you start by telling us a little about yourself?
I’m 34 years old, but my soul is approximately 1,270 years old. I live in North Carolina and graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Marketing. I have an unhealthy obsession with Sharpies, scrapbook paper, buttons, old books, and most recently Hobby Lobby. I love painting, jewelry making, sewing, and just about anything else I can create with my hands. I’ve been writing my entire life, only to keep my works hidden (until now). The written word has always been my outlet and reading has always been my escape. Those worlds collided when I decided to write the Daughters of the Sea trilogy and it’s been a terrific ride thus far!

*Where did you get the inspiration for the Daughters of the Sea series?
It’s a beautiful marriage of my true passions: the beach and history, or more specifically, mythology. I started by doing a TON of research about the different sea gods and goddesses. I knew I wanted to have a boarding school with different ‘types’ of students. That’s where the research came in. Depending on the different qualities I wanted each ‘type’ to have, I was able to choose a god or goddess for them to be descended from. I love symbolism, so the traces and stones were a no-brainer. The story just continued to grow and grow. Before I knew it I had an entire notebook of characters, a foundational plot, and plenty of scene ideas!

*If you attended Lorelei, which Sea God or Goddess would you want to be descended from?
If I attended Lorelei, I would want to be descended from Charon, however being that there are no Daughters of Charon, that’s not really an option. So my second choice would have to be Amphitrite. She is extremely pure and wise, but also very powerful. She’ll be introduced in Chosen. *wink, wink* (don’t you HATE it when I do that!? GAH.)

*If you could spend a day with any character from the literary world, who would you choose and what would you do?
Well, every sizzling, sexy male character (Patch) from every series (Lucas) I’ve ever read (Four) just popped into my head (Daniel), but in an effort to keep this PG13, I’ll refrain from using them as my answer. With that in mind, I would have to choose Minny from The Help. It might sound like an odd choice, but she is the epitome of strong women who has seen a great deal in her lifetime. I’d love to go to church with her, chat about her life, and then have her show me how to cook that mouthwatering comfort food!

*Are any of your characters based on people you know, or are they completely made up?
Actually Stasia and her roommates are all little chunks of my own layered (and slightly weird) personality. I pulled from my sarcastic side to create Carmen, my airheaded gullible blonde childlike side for Phoebe, and my dreamy, idealistic side for Willow. Stasia was pulled from my logical, strong side. So as you might imagine, coming up with conversations sometimes sounds like the different voices in my head on a daily basis. Nadia was actually inspired by a real person from my past (she-who-must-not-be-named) and Finn has many uncanny similarities to my own husband… And finally, Kira was inspired by my mom - she lives by the beach, loves to laugh, and is infinitely supportive.

*If you could only recommend one book to us, which book would you choose?
Why Men Marry B*tches. No, seriously. As a southern lady who was taught to be sweet, tolerant, and utterly selfless; this book had a profound effect on how I viewed myself, my husband, and my relationships as a whole.

*Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
I would to tell aspiring authors to write ONLY because they love, love, love to write. Not because they want to make money, not because they want to see their name on the front of a cover, not because they want their book to become the next Twilight Franchise, but because they have an obsessive and undeniable need to put their thoughts into words. That passion can be felt by your readers and its absence speaks louder than any critic.

*Is there any chance of a spin off from Daughters of the Sea series? One that maybe focused on one of Stasia’s roommates?
There is a very good chance of this, but I’ve decided to wait until Chosen comes out so that I can get some feedback on who everyone would like to know more about. And I still have to decide if I want to write more of a prequel or a true spin-off. So, stay tuned!

*Lana and I both have an obsession with really good cheesecake; is there a dessert you can’t turn down?

If you would have asked me this question a year ago, I would have said, without a doubt, apple crumb pie (my grandma’s recipe of course), but there has been a new contender in recent months that rivals even the best crumbly, sweet, cinnamony (that’s right, cinnamony) apple pie straight from the oven. This little slice of heaven is called strawberry shortcake cheesecake; also known as the best dessert *in my best nasally Taylor Swift voice* like..EVER. I discovered it at Epic Chophouse in Mooresville, NC. It begins with a graham cracker crust, one layer of cheesecake, a thin layer of strawberry yumminess, a layer of shortcake, and topped with a layer of strawberry mousse. DELISH!

Thank you again, Kristen!! We cannot wait for Chosen!!

And because Kristen ROCKS, she's having a giveaway with the Awaken Blog Tour! You can see some of the goodies being given away below! Enter NOW and Good luck everyone!

Author Appreciation, David McAfee, Nasty Little F!#*ers!

 NASTY LITTLE F!#*ERS

From the bestselling author of 33 A.D. and Saying Goodbye to the Sun.

Eight scientists and one ex-marine accept an assignment to study the effects of deforestation in Aroostook County, Maine. It’s a routine job, and everything seems to be going according to plan. But when one of their number goes missing, leaving behind only a severed foot as evidence, former lieutenant Colby Phillips must lead an expedition to find him.

What they find instead is an entirely new species. A large breed of insect whose ravenous larvae display features and abilities never before seen in nature. The scientists’ amazement turns to fear when they find themselves at the bottom of the food chain. Can Colby lead the survivors to safety? Or is it already too late?

Of course, escape would be much easier if the dead would stay that way. *amazon.com*

These are DEFINITELY some Nasty Little   F!#*ers!  Invasion of the Body Snatchers meets Night of the Living Dead; for real!  I am a huge B-horror movie buff (see previous sentence) and this book would be the PERFECT script for a FANTASTIC B-movie.  McAfee does not waste any time introducing his “Grubs” into the story as we begin our journey on a camping trip; Husband wakes up, Wife is not in tent… there is something amiss in these woods, something deadly.  Seriously… flesh eating grubs, woods, tents, camping and LOTS of warm bodies for them to feast on.  It’s a fiasco in the making and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it play out chapter after chapter.
By the time I finished this book my heart was pounding in my chest; I also slept with the lights on that night.  As with most of McAfee’s works, this is NOT suitable for children of all ages, Mature Content, Parental discretion is advised!!  If you are a campy, gory, bloody, disgusting and down right creepy with just a dash of humor fan; this is the book for you.  It got under my skin from the first page and I could not put it down (pun intended!)!
5/5 Quills.. Must Read!!

Giveaway - up for grabs is a Signed copy of Nasty Little F!#*ers!
the usual rules apply; good luck everybody!!

Help us Support J Meyers, Author of Intangible

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it. (from Goodreads

Hello there fellow readers! Today we are showing love &  support for one of our favorite authors, J Meyers! If you recall, I reviewed this book a couple months ago, and I really enjoyed every moment of it.  Why should you check this book out? Well, let's see what I had to say:

"The conflict rages throughout the book, always thrumming under the surface. The twins are coping with a huge personal loss and each are dealing with their own individual issues as well. The story is well written; funny and sometimes heartbreaking. It unfolds in a totally natural way; not too slow but not rushed either. The suspense builds and builds, leading up to a fantastic showdown at the end of the book. There is a horrifically scary villain to add terror to the story and lots of room for future installments.

To conclude, you really have to read this book! J. Meyers is a vibrant new voice for the young adult genre and I really cannot wait to see what she offers up next!"

And here's a little snippet to tempt you:
"And then she knew. No vision had ever terrified him. Never. In seventeen years. It was as if his own life were at stake. But he didn't See his own future. He only saw other's. She suddenly had a terrible feeling that she knew exactly whose future he'd Seen. Her voice was a whisper. "Do I get hurt?" His face contorted, but he didn't say anything. "Oh my god. Do I die?" He closed his eyes. "Oh." The air rushed out of her lungs on that one word. She was going to die. Luke's voice was tight, tortured when he said, "We gotta go." He bent down to pick up Sera's bag again, then headed out the door. Sera looked down at her feet. Their book bags lay there. She should probably pick those up, she thought. Luke was already on the porch, waiting. She reached down and grasped the bags, then woodenly stepped outside. Luke stared at her a moment, searching her face, then reached around her and locked the door. He started down the steps, but her voice stopped him. "Luke?" He turned to look at her. She was going to die. She knew she was going to die. But she couldn't stop herself from asking even though she already knew the answer. "Have you ever had a vision that didn't come true?" she said. "Ever?"

The story, the characters and the suspense were all thrilling in this book. I really cannot gush enough about how much you should ALL go and get a copy RIGHT NOW and read it! Then let me know what you think. I guarantee you won't be sorry!

You can buy the book here:

About the Author:

When she’s not reading or writing, she’s chasing her four kids around, exploring the outdoors with them, relishing the few quiet moments she gets with her husband, baking sweet treats, and forgetting to make dinner. Guest Post with Ciaran, Aidan, and Riona Moon of The Moon Coven by Kymberlee Burks-Miller

Hi Melissa, and all of your followers, My name is Ciaran Moon, and I along with my brother and sister over here...

*Riona and Aidan flash their dazzling smiles*

have been asked to stop by and tell everyone a little bit about us, our creator, and the books that we appear in, The Moon Coven Series.

*Riona pushes her way to the front and clears her throat*

My name is Riona, but everyone calls me Ri, I'll tell you about us...
Our family is born of the original witch. We have power, and a lot of it, but it's still new to us and most days we have NO clue what we're doing. We just kind of wing it. There are twelve of us, Ciaran, Aidan, Declan, Seamus, Cormac, Liam, Shannon, Cassie, Jessie, me, and our ring leader is Lilyann. She's a spirit witch, the first one in over five centuries! Pretty killer, right? Plus, to save the world and our family, and ourselves we have to keep the original line of vampires from getting her blood. Not a problem...yeah right! Oh, did I happen to mention that her boyfriend IS one of the said vampires, but he doesn't want to kill her or anything...

*Aidan clears his throat, and steps forward*

Great Goddess, Ri! You're going to scare them all off! I'm Aidan, let me tell you a little about our creator, Kymberlee. We've lived in her head for about a very long time. I think that maybe we drove her crazy, until she finally started putting pen to paper and writing our story for us.

She's very shy, caring, and lovable, but don't make her angry! I heard that she threatened Dax (on another blog) to write him in a tutu!

*All three bust out laughing*

*Ciaran pipes up again*

Okay, I'll tell you about the books. Haunted Moon is available now on Amazon, and Harvest Moon was just released on Saturday, so go grab those! The Special Edition of Compulsion(the book we appear in) is being released at the end of this month!

So check those, and follow us...we're the new witches in town!

Ciaran, Aidan, and Riona Moon~

A family secret that was kept hidden in the night is awakened...

The sleepy little town of Hampstead, Maryland, nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains, has no idea of the monsters lurking in their midst. Or the dangers they will face if the Moon Coven doesn't figure out how to harness the magick within.

After Lilyann Moon's grandmother dies under suspicious circumstances, she and her eleven young family members are thrown into the world of witchcraft and supernatural. A world they know nothing about. Lily's the most powerful witch in over five hundred years, but she's untrained and uninitiated. The only bright spot in this nightmare was meeting Mason. But is she in love with the enemy? She's in a race against time to save her town and coven! Will Lily survive with her heart and neck intact?

It all comes down to this one night...

All Hallow's Eve

Before Lilyann stepped into her destiny to lead the coven, there was another powerful Moon witch...her grandmother. A teenage witch in Galway, Ireland, Leeny Moon was prepared to take her rightful place in the circle along side of her kin. Until, she witnessed firsthand the forthcoming nightmares she would be expected to face.

The fight between good versus evil begins here...

Blessed Be~

And now for the newest title in The Moon Coven Series

Seventeen year old Lochlan Moon had been groomed his entire life to accept the torch that would eventually be handed to him. He put his heart and soul into mastering a craft passed down through the generations of his ancestral bloodline, Moon Magick.

Between his father's savage murder by something preternatural, and his vanishing classmates, doubts that he'd kept buried began to resurface. Someone or something is on a monstrous killing spree in his home town of Hampstead.

Lochlan's future within the family's circle teeters on a deadly precipice.

Will any of the witches survive to harness the magick within after this Harvest Moon?
